WHY WAS JERUSALEM SO IMPORTANT?

TO CHRISTIANS:
* The Holy Land was the place where Jesus grew up,taught ways to achieve salvation, held the last supper, died on the cross, and ascended into heaven. Therefore, the Christians labeled Jerusalem as the center of the world. They believed it to be the land of God's chosen people. Frequent pilgrimages to the Holy Land were mainly tolerated by the Muslims until the invasion that sparked the Crusades. On the pilgrimages, Christians would walk in the footsteps of Christ up to his death site and burial tomb.

MUSLIMS:
* Jerusalem was sacred to the Muslims because the prophet and messenger of God named Muhammed, visited there to pray and visit heaven. It is also important because the Qur'an mentions prophets of Islam named David, Solomon, Abraham and even Jesus in Jerusalem. (Remember: Jesus was not seen as God's son, but a mere prophet.) Muslims prayed toward the Mecca and Medina whilst in other lands, however Jerusalem also served as a direction of prayer. When Muslims were already present in Mecca and Medina, they prayed toward Jerusalem.
