The Crusade Projectby: Dana G. Salena M. Ashley R.
Crusade: any of the military expeditions undertaken in the 11th,12th,and 13th centuries by the Christian powers of Europe to recapture the Holy Land from the Muslims

How Many Crusades were there?
  • There were 8 total Crusades. The First, Second, Third and Fourth Crusades were known as the Principal Crusades. They were the most significant and well known. The Last Four Crusades were Minor Crusades. Shockingly, there was even a Children's Crusade.

When did the idea for a crusade start?

  • The Holy Land of Jerusalem and surrounding areas of Palestine were first taken over by the Seljuk Turks in 1065. It was very difficult to make a pilgrimage to this area that did not tolerate Christians anymore. During the attack, Christians perished and action needed to be taken to preserve the Holy Land. Not only did the Crusades provide an oppurtunity to regain Jerusalem, but it developed into a fight for personal and almost greedy satisfaction for people, popes and monarchs.
